A burglar in Germany has been arrested after calling the police to rescue him from the house he had broken into.

The 43-year-old had already stolen a mobile phone, tablet computer and snacks for his journey home when he decided to search a storeroom and became trapped.

Police in the western city of Bonn said the burglar had failed to pry open the family home’s front door in the early hours of Saturday and climbed over a gate into the back garden.

He then slipped through unlocked patio doors and started searching the living room for gadgets.

“After the burglar had collected a Notebook, mobile phone and snacks for his escape, he started searching another storeroom,” a statement from Bonn Police said.

“The door then fell shut behind him and could not be re-opened from the inside as it was broken.

“In order to free himself from the unfortunate predicament, the failed thief called the police himself and was removed and arrested shortly afterwards by officers.”

The man was released after questioning following an agreement with the Bonn public prosecutor, as no grounds for detention existed when the stolen items were taken back. The investigation continues.
