Greece’s new finance minister has been in office for less than a week but he has already proved he means business.

Yanis Varoufakis arrived at Number 11 Downing Street to meet with Chancellor George Osborne today as part of a whistle-stop tour of Europe aimed at drumming up support for a renegotiated debt deal for Greece.

Following his meeting with France’s finance minister Michel Sapin on Sunday, and Mr Osborne today, Mr Varoufakis is set to meet with the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker before returning to Greece - and he has been making his journey by travelling in economy class.

Mr Varoufakis was pictured travelling in economy class on Sunday as he spoke to reporters, with the deputy minister for international economic relations, Euclid Tsakalotos, sat in the row behind him.

Today Mr Osborne urged Mr Varoufakis to “act responsibly” when they met over coffee for what he called a “constructive” meeting, but added that “it’s also important that the Euro zone has a better plan for jobs and growth”.

Mr Varoufakis is expected to meet around 100 banks and financial institutions later today, according to Reuters.
