German Jewish leaders called for draconian measures against neo-Nazis yesterday after a second synagogue was attacked. The building, in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, was pelted with paving stones on Thursday night, leaving two windows shattered.

On Wednesday, on the eve of Germany's unification anniversary, assailants tried to set the Düsseldorf synagogue on fire, prompting Paul Spiegel, the head of Germany's 81,000-strong Jewish community, to say some were considering leaving the country.

Andreas Nachama, head of Berlin's Jewish community, said yesterday: "These broken mirrors are a mirror image of German society. This situation is alarming." He likened today's climate to the early Seventies, when Germany was swept by left-wing terror.
