Police uproot Iranians' bazaar

Police closed an impromptu Iranian bazaar in a park in central Tokyo which had become a gathering-place for immigrant workers far from home, Terry McCarthy writes from Tokyo. The police said the area was cordoned off for 'azalea planting' but civic groups said this was a pretext to kick out the foreigners.

Assassination story 'serious'

The State Department said a report about an Iraqi assassination plot to kill former President Bush in Kuwait 'is an extremely serious matter and one that has to be investigated thoroughly', AP reports from Washington.
