The liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp by Soviet troops in 1945 was marked with solemn ceremonies around the world yesterday.
A number of survivors gathered at the camp in Poland while Norway's Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg, apologised for his country's role in the arrest and deportation of Jews after it was invaded by Nazi Germany.
The international Holocaust Remembrance Day – as the occasion was commemorated by the United Nations in 2005 – also saw a special sitting at the German parliament. In Turkey, state television on Thursday broadcast the epic French documentary Shoah, about the mass murder of Jews under Germany's Nazi regime. It was the first time the film has been aired on public television in a predominantly Muslim country.
