Syria rejects plan for a limited Golan pull-out

Jerusalem (Reuter) - Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin outlined for the first time yesterday a plan for a limited Israeli pullback on the Golan Heights lasting three years to test the prospects for peace with Syria.

But in a television interview broadcast in Israel, Syria's Foreign Minister, Farouk al-Sharaa, rejected the proposal and repeated his country's position that it was ready for full peace in return for a full withdrawal from Golan.

Mr Rabin has been looking for a breakthrough in three-year-old peace talks deadlocked over the fate of the heights captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East War. Some 13,000 Jews now live in settlements there.
