Thousands of opposition activists held demonstrations yesterday against the detention of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, clouding official celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Ukraine's independence declaration.
Demonstrators marching on the President's office in Kiev were held back by riot police. Ms Tymoshenko's abuse-of-office trial has galvanised Ukraine's notoriously fragmented opposition.
