The battered body of a British woman has been found dumped in a forest on the Greek island of Rhodes.

Wendy Sullivan, 25, from the Northwich area of Cheshire, is thought to have died of multiple injuries.

Greek authorities had confirmed that there were "signs of violence around her neck" and she was understood to have been strangled during a frenzied attack, a Foreign Office spokesman said.

Miss Sullivan's body was found early yesterday morning, the spokesman said. Police immediately launched an investigation.

They had released few details about their inquiries so far, said a spokesman for the British embassy in Athens.

Miss Sullivan, who was holidaying on the Greek island with a friend, was last seen getting into a car during a night out on Monday, said the Foreign Office spokesman.

The friend, who has not been named, was questioned by police before flying back to Britain today, he said.

JMC Holidays, a Kent tour operator, said Miss Sullivan flew to Rhodes on 1 September, and was to have returned home on Saturday.

Cheshire Police said officers informed Miss Sullivan's family of her death yesterday.
