A Japanese scientist said yesterday he had raised a white eight-petal magnolia from a seed found in a 2,000-year-old tomb, Reuter reports from Tokyo.

Hiroshi Utsunomiya of Yamaguchi University said the magnolia seed was among hundreds found in a food storage chamber buried underground in a tomb in Yamaguchi prefecture, about 500 miles south- west of Tokyo.
