The trial of 41 people accused of plotting the assassination of the former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi opened in secrecy, Reuter reports from Madras. The press was barred and lawyers were ordered by the judge not to talk to the media. All the defendants are Tamils and include leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which is fighting for a separate state in Sri Lanka.
