General strike in Uruguay
MONTEVIDEO (Reuter) - Uruguay's unions went on a 24-hour general strike in protest against police reaction to riots over the extradition to Spain of three suspected Basque separatists.
A Spanish MP was expelled in connection with the riots, in which two people were killed and more than 70 injured. Jon Idigoras, MP for Herri Batasuna, the political wing of Eta, was charged with promoting violence. He arrived in Montevideo to join the campaign against extradition. The incidents were the worst in more than two decades.
