German combat role approved
BONN - The German parliament yesterday gave its blessing retrospectively to the deployment of ships and airmen around former Yugoslavia, the first time it has approved the use of German forces in a combat role abroad. Following a Supreme Court ruling that there was no constitutional barrier to the dispatch of German troops abroad, it also lifted restraints imposed on its troops in Nato units monitoring ex-Yugoslavia.
