Honecker must stay in jail
Berlin (Reuter) - A court has ruled that the former East German leader Erich Honecker, who has cancer, must stay in jail although he will probably die before his manslaughter trial ends, a Justice Ministry spokeswoman said yesterday.
The Berlin regional high court rejected Mr Honecker's appeal against his continued custody despite accepting medical reports that the 80-year-old was unlikely to survive his trial, expected to last at least until late 1993.
