Laurent Kabila's rebels massacred more than 200 unarmed Rwandan Hutu refugees at a port on the Congo River earlier this month and a further 140 at a village to the south, witnesses said.
Priests, civil servants and residents told Reuters news agency that Mr Kabila's Alliance killed more than 200 refugees on a quayside at Mbandaka, on the same day that his fighters seized the western town. A delegation of priests visited the new regional governor because they were outraged when he had said no refugees were killed.
Meanwhile, ambassadors from the United States and Britain congratulated the self-proclaimed President Kabila and promised their support. Reuters - Mbandaka
