Leader faces trial

Venezuela's Senate was set yesterday to suspend President Carlos Andres Perez and approve his trial by the Supreme Court on corruption charges, Reuter reports from Caracas.
Mr Perez, who has survived coup attempts, riots and political feuds, proclaimed his innocence after the court vote on Thursday indicting him and two ex-ministers on charges of embezzlement and misuse of public funds.
