A mother who was taunted in a coffee shop by two women calling her a "whale" has seen her Facebook post about the incident go viral.
Dianne Hoffmeyer amazed the internet by deciding not to rise to whispered words about her hair and weight, opting buying the pair a coffee each instead.
According to The Times Herald, Ms Hoffmeyer wanted to set a good example to her two-year-old daughter in the donut shop in Michigan where the incident took place - but never expected to set an example to people around the world too.
She soon communicated her version of events - that she was buying donuts for her daughter who had been teething all night, and had lost 177 pounds in the last 22 months - on Facebook.
The post read: "To the 2 mean bitter ladies that were standing in line at Tim Hortons in Fort Gratiot behind me. I could hear you. I could hear the hurtful things you said about me.
"[…] You both made me cry. Then when I ordered a coffee that I RARELY get to treat myself to you both snickered and called me a 'Retarded Lard [expletive]' I’ll have you know I've worked hard to lose 177 lbs in 22 months. I am proud of myself. You both should be ashamed of yourselves.
"But to show that my mother raised me better, I'd like to say YOU’RE WELCOME. Because this 'Fat Retarded Lard [expletive]' paid it forward and I bought your coffees this morning."
At the time of writing the Facebook post had received over 160,000 likes. Ms Hoffmeyer has reportedly been sent messages of support from as far away as New Zealand.
Although the women made her cry, she said she would like to repeat her act of kindness and explain things from her perspective.
"I'd like to buy them another cup of coffee, and talk to them. And explain to them how it made me feel," she told ABC News.Reuse content
