Lagos - Nigerian police arrested the radical lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, after he launched a new party opposed to military rule yesterday in defiance of the military government ban on political activities, the Campaign for Democracy (CD) pressure group said. Up to 2,000 people were said to have attended the National Conscience party launch. 'We are calling for the immediate release of Gani and others arrested with him,' said Sylvester Odion-Akhaine, the CD general secretary. The CD is an alliance of human rights and student groups opposed to the government.
