Sarkozy calls for support of sanctions against Iran

The French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, said time was running out to avoid a military intervention in Iran as he appealed to China and Russia to support new sanctions to force Tehran to negotiate over its nuclear programme.

France has led international efforts to increase pressure on Iran. Mr Sarkozy called for a political solution, through economic and diplomatic pressure, saying there was no military solution to the crisis.
