Riot during Guyana election

Georgetown (Reuter) - A mob that police said was linked to the ruling People's National Congress rampaged through the streets of Guyana's capital, smashing windows and throwing stones during voting in general elections. Hundreds of demonstrators surrounded the Elections Commission headquarters, shouting 'we must vote, we must vote' and claiming that their names had been dropped from the electoral register. Voting was reported as generally peaceful elsewhere in the country. Final opinion polls suggested that President Desmond Hoyte would lose narrowly to Cheddi Jagan of the opposition People's Progressive Party.
