Second day of India clashes
Fresh Hindu-Muslim clashes erupted yesterday in a north- east Indian state previously immune from sectarian strife, leaving more than 100 dead in two days of violence, Reuter reports from Guwahati.
In New Delhi, the Home Minister, Shakarrao Chavan, told parliament the army had been put on alert in Manipur state and had staged shows of strength in the worst-affected areas.
Most of the victims were Muslims, stabbed or burnt alive. Muslims form 10 per cent of the state's 1.6 million people.
