Margaret Thatcher said yesterday she was optimistic that China and Britain would settle their differences over Hong Kong, Reuter reports from Hong Kong.

Baroness Thatcher, who signed the 1984 joint declaration with Peking on returning Hong Kong to China in 1997, was visiting the colony at the invitation of Governor Chris Patten. She praised Mr Patten, thought to be one of the chief architects of her political downfall, saying: 'He's terrific.'
