British and Commonwealth veterans of the battle of Monte Cassino gathered yesterday to pay tribute to comrades on the 50th anniversary of one of the bloodiest campaigns of the Second World War, Reuter reports from Cassino. Thousands died fighting in 1944 to push German troops from the southern Italian mountain.
