Mia Farrow: It's time to end the genocide

This is a critical moment for Darfur. China must do all in its power to persuade Khartoum to stop the aerial bombardment and ground attacks on civilian populations and to immediately admit peacekeepers, as outlined in the latest UN resolution, to protect civilians and humanitarians in Darfur. We also ask that China support UN sanctions against Khartoum.

Time is running out for the people of Darfur. All nations share in the responsibility to do all they can to help bring an end to the genocide, and – after five years of conflict – to help bring peace and security to the people of Sudan. China, though, has a special obligation to respond.

These are the steps that Beijing must take:

* Immediately provide half of the transport helicopters that the UN mission Unamid requires;

* Support punitive measures, such as UN Security Council-targeted sanctions, against Khartoum officials, until peace and security is achieved in Darfur;

* Verifiably suspend all military co-operation with the Khartoum regime, including weapons transfers, until peace and security is achieved in Darfur;

* Work with the United States, France, and the United Kingdom in a quartet supporting UN and African Union initiatives in Darfur, Southern Sudan, and Chad.
