Lyubov Kremlova, of Russia, broke the 1,000 metres world record with a time of 2min 34.18sec at a meeting in Erfurt, Germany, on Wednesday evening. The previous 1,000m record of 2:34.80 was set by Brigitte Kraus, of Germany, in 1978. Inna Yesveyeva, of Ukraine, ran 2:33.93 in Moscow in 1992, but the time was not recognized because there had been no doping control. At the meeting in Erfurt, Sun Caiyun, of China, set her fifth pole vault world record in less than three weeks, clearing 4.15 metres.
