Javier Arnau, Spain's 23-year-old winger, consigned Germany to a 1-0 defeat in the opening match of the men's hockey tournament with a 51st- minute shot from a penalty corner. Spain denied the German attack space for long periods, but the defending champions came close to equalising in the last few minutes when Carsten Fischer shot against an upright. In the women's competition, Marcia Pankratz deflected a penalty corner shot into the goal with moments left to give the US team a 1-1 draw with Holland.
