Luca Cadalora starts today's Japanese 500cc Grand Prix in pole position after steady rain during final qualifying protected the lap record of 2min 8.336sec he set on Friday on the 3.64-mile Suzuka circuit. The rain allowed the Italian Yamaha rider top preserve his advantage over Michael Doohan and Kevin Schwantz.
