Two solid innings against Warwickshire at the end of the week atoned in part for an error at the start of it, when Laney spilled a chance at square leg that might have derailed Essex's charge towards a 10-wicket AXA Equity and Law League win at Southampton. Stuart Law, the beneficiary, smashed the next ball into the pavilion for six and went on to complete a 90-ball century.
