Cambridge United was put up for sale by its directors yesterday. The Third Division club's chairman, Reg Smart, said a fresh injection of cash was needed to enable the club to grow.

"My colleagues and I have given everything we can to the club over recent years," he said. "We now feel that a fresh injection of funds, and individuals on the board, will give the club the boost it needs to develop."

The club is struggling on gates of just over 2,000 and is believed to be losing more than pounds 1,000 a day. "The time has come to find out if there is anyone out there who can make the right kind of financial commitment. We are interested in hearing from anyone with the best interests of Cambridge United at heart," Smart said.

United fans have seen their side rise from the Southern League to the brink of the top flight in the last two decades.
