A child was killed after running in front of a French competitor in the Dakar Rally yesterday. The accident, involving a motorcycle rider, Marcel Pilet, occurred in the village of Tarembali, near the end of the 517km 13th stage from Kays in Mali to Labe in central Guinea. This latest fatality doubled the death toll in this year's desert marathon and took the total number of deaths in the 18-year history of the event to 33.
