THOUGH they are bottom of the table, Gloucestershire continue to show signs of a revival. Having defeated Lancashire with a day to spare last weekend, they were given hope of a second Championship victory of the summer at Edgbaston yesterday by Courtney Walsh.

The Jamaican, apparently revitalised by the assumption of the captaincy, finished with 5 for 59 as Warwickshire were dismissed for 124. Needing 260 to win, Gloucestershire were 155 for 3 at the close, with Dean Hodgson unbeaten on 51.

Durham, fellow contenders for the wooden spoon, had a disastrous afternoon, losing by an innings and 48 runs to Northamptonshire, for whom Curtly Ambrose took four wickets. There were also four wickets for Mushtaq Ahmed, in Someret's victory by an innings and 97 runs at Derby.

Nottinghamshire, 10 runs short of avoiding the follow-on when their ninth wicket fell against Sussex at Eastbourne, were saved by Greg Mike, who made 50. At Southampton, Mike Watkinson steered Lancashire to parity with Hampshire.
