Kapil Dev spearheaded India's attack as Sri Lanka slipped to the brink of defeat in the second Test in Bangalore yesterday. Kapil captured three wickets to move within three of breaking Sir Richard Hadlee's record of 431 Test victims. At the close of the third day, Sri Lanka were 179 for 7, needing another 131 runs to make India bat again. The visitors were dismissed for 231 in their first innings in reply to India's 541 for 6 declared. He removed Sri Lanka's captain, Arjuna Ranatunga, in his first spell and returned to claim two more victims.
