Cricket: Round-Up: Durham succumb to Millns

DURHAM suffered one of their more uncomfortable days in their debut first-class season yesterday, succumbing to 130 for 8 in only 41 overs at Leicester.

Rain delayed the start until late afternoon, but David Millns, Leicestershire's ex-miner, and the former Western Australia bowler Alan Mullally made up for lost time.

Millns took 4 for 7 in 19 balls to bring his total for the season to 55 wickets. Durham recovered from 39 for 4 thanks to Paul Parker and Paul Henderson, who put on 43 for the fifth wicket, but Winston Benjamin removed Parker - and then Mullally moved in with 3 for 8 in 10 balls. Durham need another 18 runs to beat their lowest total of the season.

Yorkshire - one place above Durham - had Martyn Moxon and Richard Blakey to thank for a total of 286 for 6 in a turgid day's play against Glamorgan at Cardiff. Moxon's 103 was his second century in successive matches, while Blakey was unbeaten on 100 - but, at 236 for 6 off 100 overs, the Tykes could only collect two batting bonus points.

Sussex also had two men joining the century club, with the openers, Jamie Hall and David Smith, scoring 140 not out and 105 respectively against Lancashire at Hove. Hall and Smith put on 172 in 59 overs as Sussex surged to a declaration at 342 for 5, as Warren Hegg, captaining Lancashire for the first time, had reason to regret his decision to put Sussex in to bat. Hall's score was a career-best; the off-spinner, Dexter Fitton, was Lancashire's top bowler with 4 for 81. The visitors closed on 23 without loss.

John Morris, the Derbyshire batsman, made 82 off just 126 balls against Middlesex at Derby to enhance his chances of an England tour place this winter. Morris hit 12 fours before falling to Neil Williams, having put on 124 in 34 overs with Andy Brown. In a rain-reduced day, Derbyshire were 175 for 3 at the close.

Play did not start until 3pm at The Oval, where Sussex reached 150 for 1 against Nottinghamshire, with Paul Atkins unbeaten on 72. Kent staggered to 195 for 7 against Somerset at Canterbury, where Andy Caddick picked up 3 for 58 off 15 overs.
