Cricket: Round-Up: Kent finish off Somerset

A THREE-HOUR show of defiance from Andy Hayhurst was not enough to prevent Kent from completing victory by an innings and 57 runs at Canterbury yesterday. The Somerset captain, batting without a runner in spite of a badly sprained ankle, scored an unbeaten 64 but failed to prevent his side subsiding for 227 soon after lunch.

Min Patel took his tally of wickets for the season to 90 with 3 for 58 and finished off Somerset when he had Andre van Troost stumped. Andrew Caddick was out in unusual circumstances when he hit the left-arm spinner straight back to the bowler. Patel promptly missed the return catch, but Caddick was then run out when the ball fell on to the stumps.

Richard Ellison, meanwhile, announced that he is leaving Kent after 18 seasons 'to examine other options either in or out of cricket'. The former England all-rounder, 35 later this month, said: 'I've enjoyed every minute of my playing cricket for Kent and England but believe the moment has come for a change.'

Ellison's caps came in the mid-80s and his most memorable achievement was in helping England recapture the Ashes in 1985. The series was all-square when Ellison destroyed the tourists in the fifth Test with a match return of 10 for 79 that included a spell of 4 for 1 in 15 balls in the second innings. He also helped England to another crushing victory by an innings in the sixth Test with a match haul of 7 for 81.

In Cardiff, rain denied Glamorgan the chance of beating Worcestershire when, chasing 255, they were held up by four stoppages and fell only 12 runs short on 243 for 5.

Included in their frustrated charge was a century from Stephen James and a rapid 68 off 55 balls from Matthew Maynard, the pair teaming up to put on 113 in 19 overs.

Glamorgan had declared on their Friday total and Worcestershire then scored 123 for 3 before setting the target at just under five runs an over.
