FIRST blood in the meeting of the bottom two sides in the Championship went west rather than north yesterday, as Hugh Morris scored his sixth first-class century of the season and Glamorgan built up their their highest total this summer against Durham.

Morris was in ravenous form. He raced to 70 before lunch, but then slowed down after eating, and spent a further 107 minutes in reaching a 184-ball century. All in all he hit 18 fours and a six in his 233-ball 126, and then Tony Cottey followed him with 91 as Glamorgan declared on 396 for 6.

Sachin Tendulkar scored his seventh half-century for Yorkshire, but failed to convert it into his second Championship hundred as Yorkshire slumped from 214 for 4 to 286 all out at Uxbridge. Middlesex's Dean Headley knocked over the top three, but from then on it was a battle against the spinners, with Phil Tufnell putting in a marathon spell of 37 overs and John Emburey sending down 27. The pair took six wickets between them, with Tufnell doing the main damage by taking four wickets in the space of 14 overs.

Surrey's Neil Kendrick was another spinner getting through a fair amount of work. The off-spinner took 6 for 61 in 28.5 overs as Leicestershire came back to earth after their NatWest semi-final. They were bowled out for 216 at the batting paradise that is The Oval.
