Cricket / Round-Up: Wasim on the rampage

THE WASIM AKRAM roadshow rolled over Derbyshire in spectacular fashion on a pitch that yielded 1497 runs, writes Richard Wetherell. All seemed well for Derbyshire chasing 379 with John Morris in blistering form. His century came off just 130 balls and he dominated a second- wicket stand with Tim O'Gorman of 145 in 30 overs. O'Gorman fell for 35 but Morris went on to 151 before Wasim demolished any fanciful ideas of victory Derbyshire may have had.

From 243 for 3 when O'Gorman was out, Wasim reduced Derbyshire to 267 all out. A pitch that yielded a total of 1,497 runs was no barrier as the Pakistani captain took six wickets for 11 in 49 balls.

Not much is going right for Gloucestershire these days and they stay rooted to the bottom of the County Championship thanks to Leicestershire's Phil Robinson and Paul Nixon knocking off 54 runs in the last six overs.

Needing 168 in 34 overs, Leicestershire slipped to 114 for five before Robinson and Nixon joined forces getting them five runs short as Courtney Walsh started the final over. The first ball, a shoulder-high full toss, sailed past Jack Russell for four byes and the second was pushed for a single to win Leicestershire a maximum 24 points.

Durham are five points ahead of Gloucestershire after a three-wicket loss to Worcestershire. Tim Curtis defied them for more than seven hours for an unbeaten 116. Worcestershire were 196 for 7, still 70 short, but Chris Tolley stood by his captain to deny Durham their first Championship win for more than a year.
