Broad's burst sends a warning to Worcestershire
The suspicion that promoted Worcestershire face a tall task to avoid a rapid return to the Second Division appeared to be well founded at Trent Bridge, where Nottinghamshire won by an innings and five runs. Any hopes Worcestershire had of avoiding defeat disappeared in the morning session when four wickets fell, England's Stuart Broad claiming two.
At Edgbaston, Jim Troughton's maiden double-century was the cornerstone of a record-breaking fifth-wicket partnership for Warwickshire against Hampshire. Troughton and wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose (153) put on 335. After a declaration on 630 for 8, Hampshire reached 61 for 0. In the Second Division, Middlesex's Phillip Hughes resumed on 100 but chopped a ball from Garnett Kruger on to his stumps to be out for 118. Middlesex declared on 414 for 8 – a first-innings deficit of 91. Glamorgan were four down at the close.
Derbyshire should beat Surrey at Derby, where they need only another 74 to reach at target of 218, with eight wickets in hand. A century from Stephen Peters helped Northamptonshire to draw with Kent at Canterbury.
In the Indian Premier League in Durban, England's Ravi Bopara hit a 59-ball 85 as Kings XI Punjab powered to a seven-wicket win over Bangalore Royal Challengers, whose captain, Kevin Pietersen, fell for a second-ball duck.
