County Championship round-up: Murray Goodwin completes 1,000 first-class runs in a season for 10th time
Thursday 22 August 2013
Batsman of the day
The remarkable Murray Goodwin completed 1,000 first-class runs in a season for the 10th time after hitting his fourth century for Glamorgan against Leicestershire. The Zimbabwe-born batsman will be 41 in December but his continuing success suggests he was right to complain that Sussex were hasty in letting him go after 12 years. Today's innings took his career aggregate past 23,000 runs at an average of 47.
Bowler of the day
Or perhaps that should be former bowler, since the Durham leg-spinner Scott Borthwick is now a fully fledged all-rounder. The 23-year-old toured with England Lions last winter but appears to have slipped down the international pecking order. Promoted to No 3 in Durham's batting order, however, the left-hander has thrived, completing his third century of the season as Durham kept their title chances alive with a solid opening-day performance against Surrey at Chester-le-Street – before Chris Tremlett, overlooked at The Oval, responded by taking five wickets.
A day after Warwickshire announced their interest in Nick Compton, he signed a three-year contract extension to remain at Somerset, despite maybe playing in the Second Division next season. The opener could succeed Marcus Trescothick as Somerset captain.
Meanwhile, Kent have confirmed that their 23-year-old pace bowler Matt Coles will leave at the end of the season after turning down a new contract. Coles was selected for the England Lions tour to Australia last winter but was sent home after a breach of discipline.
