County Championship round-up: Notts are quick to dispose of Kent

Nottinghamshire set down an early marker in the County Championship, completing victory by the new 16-point maximum over Kent with almost a day and a half to spare.

Needing 205 more just to make the hosts bat again at Trent Bridge, Kent crashed from 51 for 2 overnight to 72 for 5 in half an hour. Joe Denly (37) and Darren Stevens (42) held up the home side and the last three wickets added 99 but Nottinghamshire won by an innings and 32 runs nonetheless.

Notts are waiting to learn if Ryan Sidebottom will be available for their Championship match against Somerset next week before flying to the World Twenty20 in the West Indies.

Champions Durham suffered the indignity of being asked to follow on for the first time since 2006 as promoted Essex continued to dominate at the Riverside. The home side lost their last seven wickets for 33 runs in less than a session, collapsing to 198 all out in reply to Essex's 484, before losing their first two second-innings wickets for just four runs.

Half-centuries from Dale Benkenstein and Michael Di Venuto put them in better shape but they still need another 139 to make Essex bat again.

Yorkshire, who beat Warwickshire last week, are well placed to secure a second victory at the expense of Somerset, who lead by 54 at Headingley but have only four wickets remaining.

In Division Two, Northamptonshire won by 94 runs after bowling out Gloucestershire for 249 at Bristol.
