Having urged his Somerset side to "get off to a flying start" at Headingley yesterday, Marcus Trescothick got into the pilot's seat and led by example. In his first game as captain, the former England opener got his first century of the summer at the first time of asking, reaching 117 off 175 balls.

His team-mates struggled to follow his example, although Peter Trego did contribute 45 and James Hildreth 30 towards a first innings total of 272. Yorkshire were 61 for 1 at the close.

Jimmy Anderson was back in action on the opening day of Lancashire's match against Warwickshire. The England paceman, who missed the tour to Bangladesh because of a knee injury, was bowled for a duck as the home side hit 253. He then took a wicket as Warwickshire were 16 for 1 in reply.

On his Championship debut for Nottinghamshire, Hashim Amla hit 129 against Kent. Notts, First Division runners-up to Durham last summer, were 396 for 8.
