County Championship round-up: Vince's first ton marks him out as a star in the making

Hampshire's efforts to undermine title-chasing Yorkshire at Scarborough will have brought a smile to the face of England selector James Whitaker, even though he is a Skipton man.

Whitaker has admired a number of Hampshire players in his professional role, among them Jimmy Adams and 19-year-old James Vince, who both made centuries as Yorkshire – third in the First Division – fell behind at Scarborough.

Vince, whose talent has seen him likened to a young Michael Vaughan, marked Whitaker's visit to North Marine Road with his maiden first-class century, completed with consecutive fours off Rich Pyrah. He and Adams have put on 245 for the fourth wicket for a lead of 45.

With only one day left the match is destined to end in a draw, which may be the best second-placed Somerset can hope for after rain washed out the whole of the second day of their game against Durham at Taunton.

In the clash between the bottom two at Edgbaston, play was possible only in the morning but it was time enough for Essex's survival hopes to take a battering. They crashed to 90 for 7 as Warwickshire, to whom they lost at Southend two weeks ago, took advantage of a seaming pitch.

Neil Davidson's fate as Leicestershire chairman will be determined at a meeting of the county's six-man board, likely to take place today.

The board will consider a letter, signed by head coach Tim Boon and captain Matthew Hoggard, asking Davidson to resign over alleged interference in team selection. Davidson refused to quit and raised questions over Boon's future. But board member Paul Haywood said yesterday: "I don't think anything is likely to happen to Tim. The board have to decide whether they are behind the chairman or not."
