Ashes Joe Root believes Jofra Archer adds a new dynamic to England

Jofra Archer was “over the moon” after taking six wickets as England restricted Australia to 179 all out in the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

The fast bowler was the pick of England’s attack, taking the crucial wicket of David Warner who was well set on 61 before skittling the tailenders.

“I’m over the moon,” Archer said after the first day’s play. ”I though I bowled well at Lord’s too, but at Lord’s you can bowl a lot of good balls without reward so I’m just glad I got some reward.

“It was a steep hill, a strong wind, but I knew if I bowled in the right area i would get wickets whether I bowled at 80mph or 87mph.

“It’s been really good so far, from the moment I’ve put the badge on,” said Archer, who came into the England team ahead of the Cricket World Cup he helped his adopted country win last month. ”It’s been my happiest days of cricket so far and hopefully plenty more ahead.”

Warner was magnanimous afterwards, praising the man who ended his promising innings.

“He’s got pace and skill,” Warner said. “I look at him like Dale Steyn, searching for swing and movement early on but then ramping up their speed later. That is world-class bowling and England have a great prospect.”
