Michael Lumb guided Yorkshire into the last eight of the Twenty20 Cup for the first time as his unbeaten 84 secured a seven-wicket victory over rivals Lancashire at Headingley last night. Yorkshire qualified as one of the best third-placed teams.

Andrew Flintoff provided the bright moment for Lancashire, hitting two sixes and five fours in his 47 but they could only muster 131 for 9. England's one-day bowler Tim Bresnan and Richard Dawson took three wickets each. Lumb, with three sixes and nine fours, had good support from Craig White, who only made eight but shared in an opening stand of 73. Darren Lehmann hit 37 as Yorkshire eased home.

Essex confirmed their place as group winners after a four-wicket victory over Sussex at Hove with Ronnie Irani hitting a perfectly paced 100 off just 61 balls. Sussex made 173 for 5, with Matt Prior leading the way with 73. However, Irani took command, smacking two sixes and 13 fours the last of which was off the game's final ball to seal victory.

Surrey overtook Kent after beating their hosts by 60 runs at Canterbury but both teams went through. The visitors hit a challenging total of 217 for 4 with James Benning (66) and Ali Brown(44) with Mark Ramprakash (30) and Azhar Mahmood (33) doing the damage. There was an eye-catching all-round performance from Rikki Clarke, who hit 27 not out and took 3 for 33 as Kent fell short.

Warwickshire missed out on the quarters despite an 11-run win over Worcestershire at New Road - finishing as the only third-placed team in the three groups not to progress. Ian Trott top scored with 61 as Warwickshire finished on a healthy 196 for 7. Vikram Solanki did his best in response with 90 off 50 balls, but he lacked support.

Stephen Fleming (64 not out) and Samit Patel (53 not out) guided Nottinghamshire - who had already reached the last eight - to a nine-wicket victory over Derbyshire at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire needed just 16 overs of their reply after Derbyshire had made just 141 for 6, Michael Di Venuto hitting 53.

Northamptonshire, who had already qualified for the quarters, eased to an eight-wicket win over Gloucestershire at Bristol. Holders Somerset went out despite a 13-run defeat of Glamorgan, the Australian Justin Langer top scoring with 78 off 39 deliveries. Middlesex claimed their first win of the competition beating Hampshire by nine wickets.

Twenty20 quarter-finals: Essex v Yorkshire (Chelmsford); Leicestershire v Kent (Grace Road); Gloucestershire v Surrey (Bristol); Nottinghamshire v Northamptonshire (Trent Bridge). Ties to be played Monday 24 July.
