Lunch on the third day (Hampshire won toss)

Matthew Hoggard’s magic touch was in evidence again this morning, as Hampshire slid inexorably towards the follow-on after they lost their last five wickets for the addition of 44 runs.

It left them 239 runs behind Yorkshire in the first innings and the word from the home dressing room at lunch was that the follow-on would be enforced.

Hoggard put the skids under Hampshire when, with the first delivery of the day he got Nic Pothas to edge a low catch to Jacques Rudolph at first slip.

The ball looked to be dying on Rudolph but he took it superbly and Pothas departed without having added to his overnight 36. The wicket meant that Hoggard had taken all six Hampshire wickets to have fallen at that stage.

His run was broken shortly afterwards though when Rudolph claimed his second catch of the morning to dismiss Greg Lamb and give Deon Kruis his first wicket of the innings.

Hoggard was rested after four overs, a morning spell which had yielded just half a dozen runs and he finished with a return of 6-57 off 19 overs.

Hampshire captain Dimitri Mascarenhas and James Tomlinson brought a temporary halt to the collapse wickets with a 23 run stand for the eighth wicket.

But then Ajmal Shahjad struck, Mascarenhas trying to force a ball but succeeding only in finding Andrew Gale at cover and with the score still on 145 Tim Bresnan then had Chris Tremlett well taken by Joe Sayers at third slip.

Tomlinson and Shane Bond then managed to negotiate their way through the minefield of Shahjad and leg spinner Adil Rashid, adding 13 runs and coping with the distraction of a 12-minute stoppage some 25 minutes before the lunch interval.

Bond could not quite make it into the interval however, slicing a drive to Michael Vaughan at backward point in the last over before lunch.
