Phillip Hughes death: First Test between Australia and India moved to Adelaide and rescheduled to allow team-mates to mourn

Hughes' funeral will take place on Wednesday with the original start date set for Thursday

The First Test between Australia and India has been moved to Adelaide and rescheduled for Tuesday 9 December following the death of batsman Phillip Hughes.

The match, which was due to take place in Brisbane and begins a four-Test series between the two countries, was postponed late last week in order to allow Hughes’ Australian team-mates mourn the death of the close friend and colleague, with his funeral taking place on Wednesday.

Hughes was fatally injured in a domestic cricket match last Tuesday while representing South Australia against New South Wales. Attempting to play a pull shot to a Sean Abbott bouncer, Hughes mistimed the shot and was struck on the back of the neck.

Despite being treated immediately and transferred by air ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Hughes succumbed to his injuries two days’ later, and it was confirmed he had suffered a vertebral artery dissection from the impact of the ball.

The Australian and Indian cricket boards discussed a number of changes to the series along with the players’ union, but elected to reschedule the First Test rather than cancel it altogether.

A revised schedule has been posted on Cricket Australia’s website which shows Adelaide – which was due to hold the Second Test from 12 December – will now start the series in what will be a highly emotional game for both teams involved.

Brisbane will still host a game with the Second Test due to take place from 17 December, while the third remains unchanged with a Boxing Day start planned for the match in Melbourne.

The Fourth Test, due to take place in Sydney where Hughes tragically died, will begin three days’ later than planned on 6 January 2015, with the Sydney Cricket Ground posing a difficult venue for the Australian team given what happened there last week.

The Indian team cancelled their flights to Brisbane early this morning and with their base in Adelaide, the changes are far from surprising. Cricket Australia had already confirmed that the match had been postponed, given that it was due to start on Thursday just a day after family and friends will say goodbye to Hughes, who would have turned 26 yesterday.

Michael Clarke gave an emotional tribute to Hughes on Sunday, with a number of trinutes being paid to the likeable cricketer.

The entire sporting world was shocked by the news of Hughes’ death, with a tribute sweeping Twitter since Friday that saw #putoutyourbats trending as cricket players and fans paid tribute to the opener.

A minute’s applause was held at Twickenham before England’s autumn international with Australia, while Mile Jedinak paid tribute to Hughes before the 1-1 draw with Swansea as the Australian football captain brought a bat out before kick-off.
