Round-up: Clare takes five to leave Glamorgan in trouble

Turmoil off the field and poor results on it have made this a season like so many others for Derbyshire but they must fancy they can double their tally of Championship wins for the season against a fairly feeble Glamorgan in Cardiff.

Among the Glamorgan bowlers, only Jim Allenby mastered the essential discipline of bowling straight during the Derbyshire innings and when the visiting attack managed to respond with greater collective accuracy the home batsmen collapsed to 60 for 5, still more than 300 behind with half their first-innings wickets gone.

Their captain, Alviro Petersen, found the business of protecting his wicket rather less problematic but his half-century turned out to be a gesture with little in the way of meaningful support as wickets tumbled at the other end. Mark Wallace was a worthy ally for a while but when Graham Wagg became a fifth victim for seamer Jonathan Clare, Glamorgan were 138-8 and still 80 short of avoiding the follow-on.

Former Leicestershire all rounder Allenby finished with five for 44, which will be hugely encouraging to him after undergoing a stomach operation in the close season. Allenby's victims included Tom Knight, a Sheffield-born left-arm spinner who bagged a first-ball duck on his first-class debut, on his 18th birthday. Petersen will resume 17 short of his century but Glamorgan's arrears stand at 193.

There was more frustration for England's Test captain, Andrew Strauss, who was denied an opportunity to bat for the second day running at Uxbridge, this time because of the weather, which allowed only 10 overs to be bowled.

Meanwhile, off-spinner Majid Haq took four for 33 as Scotland bowled the Netherlands out for 240 in 49 overs to win the one-day international in Aberdeen by 15 runs.
