Yorkshire's title challenge is under pressure at Chester-le-Street, where Ajmal Shahzad returned a career-best 5 for 51 as Durham were bowled out for 213 after being put in only for Andrew Gale's team to slump to 116 for 7.

Michael di Venuto had held Yorkshire at bay, finishing unbeaten on 117, the third time he has carried his bat through a Durham innings. Captain Phil Mustard offered support with 53 in a stand of 115 for the sixth wicket but otherwise only Gordon Muchall made it to double figures.

Yorkshire's reply got off to a stuttering start, however. Mitch Claydon had Adam Lyth caught at gully and bowled Jacques Rudolph via an inside edge and then Steve Harmison dismissed Tim Bresnan via a catch at third slip before obtaining an lbw verdict against Gale next ball.

Bresnan is due to leave the match today to fulfil his duties as bowling cover for England at The Oval but returns tomorrow.

Jonathan Bairstow was leg before to Liam Plunkett and Gerard Brophy was bowled by Ian Blackwell. Anthony McGrath, dropped on 20, passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season but Adil Rashid, put down on nine, was caught behind to become a third victim for Harmison.

Shahzad twice took two wickets in three balls and Di Venuto completed his 156-ball hundred, with 14 fours, only after last man Harmison had been dropped at third slip.

Somerset, second in Division One, two points behind Nottinghamshire and three ahead of Yorkshire, begin their next match against Essex at Colchester tomorrow.
