The field for the seniors race in the Greater London Championships at Shirley Hills, Croydon, on Sunday is finely balanced. Richard Thackray leads the Great Britain Amateur team fresh from their race tomorrow at Koksijde, Belgium, the venue for the World Championships in January. Britannia, the B team, and Junior Britain will back them up. In the professional camp, Steve Douce, who is not fully fit, will have to contend with David Baker, Barrie Clarke and Gary Foord, together with a strong contingent from Belgium and the Netherlands, on a course that is fast and demanding.

How to get there: Shirley Hills is one mile east of Croydon town centre. From M25, take M23 and A23 northbound, turning right at Geoffrey Butler Cycles in Croydon centre. Programme: mountain bikes 10.45am; under-12s noon; juveniles 1pm; Championship 2pm.
