This year's senior men's race in the National Championships promises to be a memorable affair. Steve Douce, the Reigate professional, is aiming for a record eighth win, but has had a patchy season and remains without a sponsor. Unable to repeat his form of last year, when he was unbeaten by British opposition, he may find it too difficult to beat the ever-improving Roger Hammond, the former world junior champion, in only his second senior season. Hammond already leads the National Trophy series this season from Douce, who won it last year. At the Macclesfield Supacross on 27 December, a guide to riders' form prior to the National Championships, Hammond was again dominant.

How to get there: Southampton Sports Centre is to north of the city at Bassett, signposted two miles on the main road into the city from the end of the M3. The women's championship is at 11.15am, followed by the juniors at 12.45pm and the senior title race at 2.15pm.
