Equestrianism: Brown wins colours
KELLY BROWN joins the Whitaker brothers and Nick Skelton in Britain's show jumping team for the World Equestrian Games in The Hague from 27 July. She is the first woman to be selected for a senior championship since Liz Edgar rode for the British team who finished fourth in the 1981 European Championships some 13 years ago.
There was never any doubt that the two Whitakers and Skelton would be chosen. But there has been a long, hard fight for the fourth place, which was not resolved until Sunday when Brown rode Alfredo to three clear rounds and fifth place in the Luxembourg Grand Prix.
Emma-Jane Brown (Kelly's sister) was reserve for the last Games in Stockholm in 1990. That position now goes to Warren Clarke on Benjumin, one mistake only during the two rounds of the Nations' Cup in La Baule last Friday.
BRITISH SHOW JUMPING TEAM (for World Equestrian Games, The Hague, 27 July-7 August): K Brown (Alfredo), N Skelton (Everest Dollar Girl and Limited Edition), J Whitaker (Everest Gammon and Grannusch), M Whitaker (Everest Midnight Madness and Twostep). Reserve: W Clarke (Benjumin II).
