ARSENAL

Forecast 5th

The gaze has shifted, across North London, to Highbury as Bruce Rioch seeks to build a team to match the stadium. Doubts remain about the size of Dennis Bergkamp's fee but he has the quality to do well. David Platt will provide goals and more flexible ballast in midfield but Arsenal are still short of creativity. By the time further signings are blended in, and Rioch's passing philosophy instilled, the title may be beyond them but another cup is within reach.

Manager: Bruce Rioch

In: Dennis Bergkamp (Internazionale) pounds 7.5m; David Platt (Sampdoria) pounds 4.75m

ASTON VILLA

Forecast 12th

Doubts at the back, where Paul McGrath's knees must creak into gear once more and Ugo Ehiogu, though improving, is often careless. But there is plenty of fresh drive, with Gareth Southgate and Mark Draper in midfield, while Savo Milosevic brings real possibilities to the attack. Brian Little's biggest problem may be the chairman's expectations as much work remains before the Holte End can dream of chasing titles again. At least last year's relegation struggle should be avoided.

Manager: Brian Little

In: Savo Milosevic (Partizan Belgrade) pounds 3.5m; Gareth Southgate (Crystal Palace) pounds 2.5m; Mark Draper (Leicester) pounds 3.25m

Out: Dean Saunders (Galatasaray) pounds 1.5m; Dalian Atkinson (Fenerbahce) pounds 1.7m; Shaun Teale (Tranmere Rovers) pounds 500,000; John Fashanu (retired)

BLACKBURN

Forecast 4th

Manchester United were not the only team distracted by the Champions' League last season - less than half the entrants retained their domestic titles, and most of those who did were in one-horse leagues. Blackburn will suffer similarly, and are equally unlikely to be consoled by European success. At home they will be the team to beat but their solidity and confidence should ensure few do so. Last year's success may lead to a more fluid approach but do not bet on it.

Manager: Ray Harford

In: Matty Holmes (West Ham) pounds 600,000 plus player exchange; Adam Reed (Darlington) pounds 200,000

BOLTON

Forecast 20th

The new ground is only a year away but it is unlikely to be ready in time to host Premiership football. The omens were grim even before Bruce Rioch departed. In the last five years only Blackburn have been promoted through the play-offs and survived and Bolton have no Jack Walker. There will be big-money transfers, but in the wrong direction with Stubbs and McAteer coveted at Highbury and elsewhere. Plenty of spirit which may enable them to avoid the disintegration suffered by Swindon.

Manager: Roy McFarland

In: Gerry Taggart (Barnsley) pounds 1.5m; Andy Todd (Middlesbrough) pounds 250,000; Chris Fairclough (Leeds) pounds 500,000

Possibilities and problems in equal measure. Ruud Gullit has probably never played alongside the likes of Frank Sinclair before while Paul Furlong will come as a shock to Mark Hughes after working with Eric Cantona. Those players, and others, should learn much from these ageing maestros but only Dennis Wise will be on the same wavelength. Another season of reconstruction beckons as Glenn Hoddle seeks to develop the continental touch on the pitch and the board fight for the honour of finishing the job off it.

COVENTRY

Forecast 15th

The juxtaposition of Mr Bojangles and the country's dullest club still takes some getting used to but there are signs that both parties are good for each other. Ron Atkinson no longer looks like a second-hand car saleman while ambition has been re-introduced into Coventry's vocabulary. A forward line of Peter Ndlovu, Dion Dublin, Isaias, the Brazilian, and John Salako is alluring but elsewhere the side looks too brittle.

Manager: Ron Atkinson

In: Isaias (Benfica) pounds 500,000; John Salako (Crystal Palace) pounds 1.5m; Carlos Batista (Farense) pounds 125,000; Paul Telfer (Luton) pounds 1m; Paul Williams (Derby) pounds 750,000; Peter Shilton (Bolton) free.

EVERTON

Forecast 8th

The dogs of war, having ensured survival last season, may be heading for the kennels as Joe Royle slowly restores the School of Science image he was weaned on. There will always be a place for Barry Horne but Anders Limpar and either Andrei Kanchelskis, or the more thoughtful skills of the youngster, Tony Grant, will now be alongside. More spending is likely, especially if Duncan Ferguson, the forward totem, loses his appeal against imprisonment. A European Cup-Winners' Cup run is well within reach.

Manager: Joe Royle

LEEDS UTD

Forecast 6th

Only Paul Beesley to show for another fruitless summer wooing foreign forwards. Since the defence was already sound this is hardly likely to turn Leeds from fringe candidates to genuine title hopefuls. Tony Yeboah, in his first full season, could score heavily but lacks support. Only Gary McAllister has played to potential since the 1992 championship which now seems more of a one-off than ever. The fans' European campaign will be watched as closely as the players'.

LIVERPOOL

Forecast Champions

Looked promising last year and, although Stan Collymore is not the final piece in the jigsaw, he may tilt the balance in an open year. His arrival means Robbie Fowler can be rested occasionally while Ian Rush demonstrates the value of selflessness to both of them. Collymore's power should improve Liverpool's penetration at home leaving the inconsistency of David James and Phil Babb as the main worries. Could do well in Europe but may be best served by an early exit. Balanced squad, with more depth than most.

MANCHESTER CITY

Forecast 19th

Alan Ball may find management a different proposition without Matthew Le Tissier to build a side around. A shortage of cash and quality points to a season of struggle which may lead to a reappraisal of Brian Horton's record. Georgi Kinkladze is an interesting addition but the problems are defensive, there is plenty of attacking flair if they can get the service. The biggest lift would a successful return from injury by Paul Lake - and a bad season for their neighbours.

MANCHESTER UTD

Forecast 3rd

A transitional season, over dependent on Eric Cantona's return, but one in which they will still challenge. Paul Parker's recovery, and Gary Neville's emergence, gives them options at the back while the combination of Roy Keane and Nicky Butt could consign Paul Ince to history. But Andrei Kanchelskis's pace and goals could be missed, especially if Ryan Giggs again struggles for fitness. Not as explosive, but still as attractive as anyone. A lot of 'ifs' - Cole, Cantona, Giggs - but the potential is there.

Manager: Alex Ferguson

MIDDLESBROUGH

Forecast 17th

Last year's title, the new stadium, and Bryan Robson's drive should enable a good start but it will soon go wrong if the team is not strengthened. Nick Barmby's pounds 5.25m purchase indicates that both the finance, and the will to use it, are there but it is just a start. The next investment will need to be in defence, then another midfielder and a partner for Jan Age Fjortoft. He and Alan Moore, a cultured left-winger, should link well with Barmby.

NEWCASTLE

Forecast 2nd

Expectation is enormous but the new signings may need time. Footballers often struggle to settle in the north-east, despite its hospitable nature, and the new men are from different cultures. The worldly Les Ferdinand could adapt quickest, if he does he could be the biggest Gallowgate hero since Supermac, never mind Andy Cole. Equally important is the successful return from injury of Philippe Albert and Scott Sellars. Will be thrilling to watch when they have the ball, a bit more battle required when they do not.

Manager: Kevin Keegan

In: Les Ferdinand (QPR) pounds 6m; Warren Barton (Wimbledon) pounds 4m; David Ginola (Paris St-G) pounds 2.5m; Shaka Hislop (Reading) pounds 1.5m

Stan Collymore's ability will be missed, even if, judging by last year's estrangement, his personality will not. Frank Clark has gambled with his investments - Arsenal fans could not wait to get shot of Kevin Campbell; Andrea Silenzi has only ever had one goalscoring season; and Chris Bart- Williams is still waiting to graduate from "potential" to performance. However, Clark's transfer record is excellent and the shape of the team remains good. Could be England's best in Europe.

Simon Osborn is a shrewd signing, Geoffrey Goodridge a speculative one, and Ned Zelic is a bit of both. The one area Ray Wilkins has not invested is in central attack where Danny Dichio, 20, is likely to be handed Les Ferdinand's mantle. He and Kevin Gallen, 19, will thus form the youngest striking partnership in the country. Andy Impey and Trevor Sinclair should ensure they get plenty of chances but Wilkins has been dusting off his boots to make sure. Will be entertaining to watch, and may prosper in a cup.

Forecast 11th

The great conundrum. Good players, but not a team. David Pleat should instill a better shape but he will need better fortune than Trevor Francis had with injuries, notably to David Hirst and Chris Waddle. Otherwise goals will be a problem although the approach play should be delightful. Mark Pembridge's bustle is a valuable addition but here, as at so many clubs, the commodity required most is the one in greatest scarcity - time.

SOUTHAMPTON

Forecast 16th

Without him, no chance, with him, they should survive. It is going to be a season of panic for Dave Merrington every time Matthew Le Tissier goes down in a tackle. The dangers inherent in Southampton's over-dependence on Le Tissier illustrates why Terry Venables is disinclined to follow suit. His performances, and their results, are the counter argument. The club do have other decent players - Jim Magilton, Neil Shipperley, Richard Hall - but not enough of them. Worth watching, for you-know-who.

TOTTENHAM

Forecast 14th

What a difference a year makes. Ardiles has gone but so have his World Cup signings Klinsmann and Popescu. Ilie Dumitrescu only remains as no- one else wants him. Klinsmann is irreplacable but Nick Barmby will be equally missed. Under Gerry Francis's aegis Chris Armstrong may mature as Les Ferdinand did but an often critical support may not wait for him to do so. Injuries and dissension mean the club begins unhappily. Things are unlikely to improve.

Manager: Gerry Francis

In: Chris Armstrong (Crystal Palace) pounds 4.5m; Clive Wilson (QPR) free

Out: Nick Barmby (Middlesbrough) pounds 5.25m; Gica Popescu (Barcelona) pounds 3m; Jurgen Klinsmann (Bayern Munich) pounds 1.25m; John Hendry (Motherwell) pounds 200,000

WEST HAM

Forecast 18th

Their spirited revival last year, and the presence of quality players like John Moncur and Marc Reiper, makes tipping them for the drop a dangerous business. The main problem is in attack where Tony Cottee has endured a series of dubious partners. The latest, Marco Boogers, has been a frequent scorer in weak teams in the Netherlands so he should feel at home. There are also gaps elsewhere and it would help if Don Hutchinson, the club's most expensive player at pounds 1.5m, showed the same single-mindedness as Julian Dicks.

Manager: Harry Redknapp

In: Marco Boogers (Sparta Rotterdam) pounds 1m; Robbie Slater (Blackburn) player exchange plus pounds 600,000; Stan Lazaridis (West Adelaide) pounds 300,000

Out: Matt Holmes (Blackburn) player exchange; Matt Holland (Bournemouth) free; Trevor Morley (Reading) free; Jamie Victory (Bournemouth)

Ground capacity: 26,002

Admission: pounds 14-pounds 25 with reductions for members; concessions pounds 8-pounds 10

WIMBLEDON

Forecast 13th

Gradual evolution from ugly scrappers to acceptable footballers continues, though it can only be completed when the Jones boy has moved on. Joe Kinnear's achievements here are not as widely recognised as they ought to be - although Ireland may come calling when Big Jack goes. In particular he has retained the world's-against-us mood which is so crucial to their survival while cutting back the physical excesses. Chris Perry and Alan Reeves provide a solid and improving defensive bulwark.

Manager: Joe Kinnear

In: Paul Heald (Leyton Orient) pounds 125,000

Out: Warren Barton (Newcastle United) pounds 4m; Steve Anthrobus (Shrewsbury Town) pounds 25,000

Ground capacity: 26,500
